Matthew Miles is a senior solicitor in our Family Department, with over 17 years’ experience.

Matthew has specialised in family law work and practised in Yorkshire since qualifying as a solicitor in 2008. He has been singled out in the Legal 500 and Chambers directories as an expert in his field, described as ‘bringing to bear the right combination of intellectual rigour, careful preparation and sound judgement’.

Matthew prides himself on providing a first rate service of the highest quality, providing clients with holistic, tailored and constructive advice enabling them to resolve the legal, practical and financial complexities of their relationship. Known for a pragmatic approach to cases and an ability to negotiate effectively, bringing common sense to the most contentious of disputes. Matthew is personable, empathetic and understanding of client’s needs.

Matthew has a broad spectrum of expertise in all family matters including:-

• Divorce and financial settlements.

• Complex financial remedy proceedings involving the likes of business interests, pensions, third party claims, overseas assets and farming cases.

• Same sex couples and civil partnerships.

• Wealth protection, including pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements.

• Separation agreements.

• Cohabitation agreements.

• Property disputes between cohabiting couples.

• Schedule 1 applications for financial provision on behalf of children for unmarried parents with high incomes or significant assets.

• Arrangements relating to children, including proceedings for shared care arrangements, disputes over internal / international relocation outside of the English jurisdiction, and specific issues regarding the likes of schooling/education and medical care.

Matthew is a regular commentator in the media on family law issues, including regular articles for the ‘country life’ supplement of The Yorkshire Post.

Matthew previously served as the Treasurer for the West & North Yorkshire region of ‘Resolution’, the National association of accredited specialist family lawyers. He was also a founding member and former chair of Young Resolution (‘YRes’) running seminars and networking events across the Yorkshire region, promoting family law issues and reform on a national level and raising money for local charities.

Matthew is based in our Knaresborough and Harrogate offices but also works in our York office.
