How to Get a Training Contract with Newtons Transcript
So, I’ve just done a nice little video with Jess and Kate, who just qualified, so a very exciting time for them. I thought it might be useful if we did a little video on how to get a training contract. There are lots of people going through law school, more than there are training contracts available, which isn’t great. I don’t agree with it, but that’s the way it is, so there is a great deal of competition for training contracts, and we certainly get a lot of applications here.
What we find is that people will start with us as legal assistants, which is good for them because they get their foot in the door with a law firm and start to learn their trade. Hopefully, they will progress with us, but if not, it puts them in a better position that makes them more attractive to another firm if they’re able to get a training contract. And then what happens is, if we all get on and we’re impressed by them and they like us, we will offer a training contract and help people get their foot on the first rung of the ladder in their legal careers.
Our training principal is actually Will Newton, who is a relatively junior solicitor. He’s probably two or three years qualified, now. He did his training with us, and once he did his training, I said, ‘How did it go?’ And he said, ‘Well, it could have been a bit better.’ So, I said to him, ‘Look, you know exactly what you want out of a training contract. You’ve just been through it. Why don’t you become the training principal?’ And that’s what we’ve done, and that’s what Will’s done. And certainly the trainees that come through Newtons are very pleased with the support that they get from Will as they progress and qualify.
